Stock image license basics for creative use

Review stock image license basics and the questions to ask before using a visual in a website, campaign, presentation, or product.

Read the license. Keep the possibilities. — Stockphoto.now visual guide

A download button tells you where to get a file. A license tells you what the provider permits you to do with it. Those are different questions. This guide offers a practical reading checklist; the terms attached to a particular image remain the source to consult for that image.

Match the image license to your intended use

Write down where the image will appear: a personal website, a paid advertisement, a client presentation, product packaging, or an item sold to customers. Then check whether the license covers that use. Do not assume that permission for a website also covers selling the image as the primary value of a print or template.

Check who needs permission. A freelancer delivering work to a client may need to understand whether the client receives rights directly, whether the asset can be transferred, and whether additional users can access the source file. Different libraries answer these questions differently.

Check image permissions separately from price

“Free” describes a price. “Royalty-free” commonly describes a licensing arrangement; it is not a promise that every possible use is allowed. “No attribution required” addresses credit, not ownership or all other restrictions. Read the actual conditions instead of treating a short marketing label as a complete agreement.

Stockphoto.now provides a site-specific license for its downloadable library images. It permits personal and commercial creative projects subject to stated conditions. It is not a promise that any depicted subject is cleared for every use, nor an assertion that copyright rules are identical everywhere.

Check model, property, and trademark rights

Recognizable people, trademarks, artwork, and property can introduce questions that an image copyright license alone does not resolve. A model release or property release, where relevant, is separate information. Do not invent a release because a face or building looks generic.

AI-generated visuals introduce another important distinction: an imagined scene is not evidence of a real person, place, product, or event. Avoid presentations that turn a fictional image into a supposed customer testimonial or a documentary claim. See responsible AI image use.

Keep a record of your image license

  • The image page URL and download date.
  • The license text or version applicable at the time.
  • The project and intended distribution.
  • Any attribution, release, or use restrictions supplied.
  • Any separate permission you obtained for a particular use.

Store that record with the project files. It helps a future editor understand why the asset was selected and what conditions were checked. If an intended use is unclear, ask the provider before release; higher-stakes legal questions deserve qualified advice.

Present AI stock images without misleading claims

A technically permitted file can still be used in a misleading way. Do not imply that a depicted person endorses a product, that an imagined location is a real listing, or that an image verifies a factual claim. License review and editorial judgment work together.
